Online courses

Are you curious about the specific framework of the online courses? You would like to know more about the structure and set-up of the courses? This page gives you all the information you need.

Time commitment and flexibility
  • The weekly hours are determined for each course individually and mentioned in the respective syllabus.
  • Start and end dates: all three courses will take place in fall 2026. The specific dates are mentioned in the respective syllabus. Depending on the participants’ time zone, the times might be subject to change.
  • Live classes and self-paced learning: The courses require attendance at live sessions and also include self-paced periods. This way, we want to provide sessions with high participant engagement, lectures and lively discussions, while also allowing flexibility.
Required technology
  • Ensure you have a stable internet connection and the necessary software (Zoom).
  • When attending the classes, you should be at a quiet place where you can listen easily and are free to speak.
  • Before the course, we will provide the participants with information about our Learning Management System Moodle where you will find a detailed onboarding tutorial.
Online Meeting Etiquette
  • Preparation: Check your audio and video in advance, join on time, and log in under your real name. Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a clean, professional background.
  • Participation: Keep your microphone muted when not speaking and turn on your camera where possible. Stay attentive, avoid multitasking, and use chat or hand-raising features appropriately to contribute without interrupting.
  • Conduct: Dress suitably, communicate respectfully, and stick to the meeting’s purpose. Inform participants about any recording, and avoid distractions such as eating on camera.
  • Closing & Privacy: Wrap up meetings in a professional manner, notify others if you leave early, and respect privacy by not recording or sharing content without consent.
Tips for attending an online course
  • Find a Dedicated Workspace: Your kitchen table, a desk in the living room, or one room as your home office... find an appropriate space for attending the courses.
  • Keep It Tidy: A tidy workspace will make a tidy mind and will support you in getting tasks done.
  • Pick Somewhere with Natural Daylight: It makes a difference in your mood and your productivity where you sit while working.
  • Take Virtual Meetings and Working Hours Seriously: Make sure that you make a difference between your course hours and your free time, although you are in your private place. Your clothing and time discipline will help you stay focused and show your other attendees and the lecturer that you are committed to the course.
For participants of the course Global Challenges through a Berlin Lens

Are you wondering whether you need a visa or health insurance for your week at Humboldt-Universität? We have compiled the most important information to ensure a smooth stay in Berlin.

Visa

You can check whether you need a visa for your visit to Germany on the Federal Foreign Office website under visa requirements. If you need to apply for a visa, we will be happy to issue an official letter of invitation once registration and payment of the full course fee is complete. This can be sent to you by post or e-mail. As this can take some time, we recommend that you register for the courses as early as possible.

Accommodation

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin does not provide student accommodation for participants of short-term programs. To make your journey easier to manage, we support you in your search for adequate housing in Berlin. Once you have been admitted to the program, we will provide recommendations and practical tips to help you find a suitable place to stay for the duration of the program.

The address of Humboldt's main building is Unter den Linden 6, 10117 Berlin. At this point, we would like to mention that Humboldt-Universität is not a typical campus university, meaning the classrooms are in different parts of the city. However, all classrooms are in the district Mitte, and Berlin's public transportation is excellent.

You may want to check out hostels or flats in districts like Schöneberg, Wedding, Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Friedrichshain, or Prenzlauer Berg.

Insurance

The program fees do not include insurance coverage. All participants must have a health insurance valid in Germany - without such insurance, medical care in Germany can be very expensive. Nationals of some countries must present proof of insurance when applying for a visa. German customs can also request proof of insurance when crossing the border.

In addition to health insurance, we recommend accident and liability insurance. The liability for damage culpably caused rests with the course participants.
