Overall costs for participating in the Humboldt Internship Program
Time abroad always comes with some additional financial impact. On this page, you can find everything about the costs you would incur during the Humboldt Internship Program. You will also find some information on possible discounts and funding/ scholarship opportunities that can help help reduce some of these costs.

Expenditure

To enroll at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, you will need to pay a one-time fee of about 240 euros before the program begins. Once you arrive in Berlin and start the program, you will receive a Campus Card, which gives you access to all university services, including the libraries. The Campus Card also offers discounts across Berlin, for example at museums and concert halls. In addition, your enrollment includes a public transport pass (Deutschlandticket), valid in Berlin as well as on regional trains and public buses throughout Germany.

In addition to the enrollment fee, you should consider the following expenses when planning your study stay in Berlin:
  • Visa costs (depending on nationality)
  • Flight ticket (outward and return flight)
  • Health insurance
  • Accommodation (approx. 500 to 900 euros per month)
  • Other living expenses for e.g. food, telephone, internet, leisure activities (approx. 300 to 500 euros per month)

You can find a helpful summary of the cost of living for students in Germany on the DAAD website.

Scholarships and funding opportunities

Scholarships for participation in the Humboldt Internship Program are not awarded by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, but by external institutions:

  • Santander Consumer Bank and Santander Universities provide scholarships for program participants. Applications are made via the Santander Open Academy database and the program coordination of the Humboldt Internship Program.
  • The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) also awards scholarships. Information on country-specific application deadlines and funding requirements can be found on the DAAD website. It is also highly recommended that you search the DAAD Scholarship Database and contact a DAAD office in your home country.
  • Some other sources that may provide information on country-specific funding include your home university, organizations in cooperation with Germany, scholarship databases of the Ministry of Education and other state institutions in your country of origin or country of residence.

The application deadlines usually differ from those of the Humboldt Internship Program, so please inform yourself six to eight months before the start of the course. The Humboldt Internship Program cannot help you with your application for a scholarship.
