Credits and Certificate

Participants will receive 8 ECTS credit points and a certificate if they attend regularly (at least 80% attendance) and participate actively. Additionally, six weeks after the end of the course a Transcript of Records is issued by Humboldt-Universität.

Description

“Get out of the classroom, dip into the city”– this motto of the course can be taken literally as the  combination of language class, class-related excursions and cultural activities allows a hands-on experience of the German language and culture and how it is practiced in daily and social life.

The syllabus is comprised of traditional language instructions where you can improve your foreign language skills with weekly foci on aspects of German life (including excursions) and a cultural program.

Principles of action-oriented and individual learning are focused in the course and therefore, interests and motivation of the participants are important conditions. The willingness to question factual knowledge as well as producing creativity and individual perspectives do not only form the work and results of this course in a special way, but also support the social skills and self-confidence for dealing with the foreign language.

Course structure


In this course, the entire city of Berlin is the classroom. 

You will receive a total of 80 contact hours.

The course is held from Monday through Friday in four 45 minutes lectures per day (9.30 am – 11 am and 11.30 am – 1 pm, also see schedule below).

Course topics are presented in various methods, with main focus on verbal conversation in authentic situations and learning from experience.

The syllabus is comprised of language instructions, where you can improve your German language skills with weekly foci on aspects of the German culture, politics, history and literature & theater and various cultural activities.

Cultural activities
HUWISU offers a fine selection of interesting extra-curricular activities and aims to give all participants an unforgettable stay in Berlin. Your program includes excursions, sport activities and social gatherings providing you the opportunity to get to know the city, the university and to meet students from all parts of the world. The costs for these offers are included in the course fees.

Activities and tours we offer regularly: Federal Chancellery, German Parliament, House of Representatives, Topography of Terror, Political Archive, Museum Island, Kreuzberg Tour, Daytrip to Potsdam, Exhibitions…

Student Profile

This course is specifically designed for those who are interested in comprehensive and intensive German language training. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students as well as Ph.D. candidates.

To be able to follow the course in an optimal way students should have completed all A2 language level courses. The levels are based on the guidelines set by the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages".

Allocation to a certain language level is based on information provided during registration and a placement test, which is done online four weeks before the course starts.

Participants must be at least 18 years old.

TBA - Qualified language teachers

The lecturers all have academic degrees and international teaching experience. In the varied teaching sessions they are highly committed to the learning progress of the students.
